CHADD

CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is the nation’s leading non-profit organization for providing education, advocacy and support to individuals with ADHD and their families. Engage worked with CHADD to overhaul their site, focussing on user expereience and intergration with their chosen AMS.

CHADD (Children and Adults with Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder) is the nation’s leading non-profit organization for providing education, advocacy and support to individuals with ADHD and their families. CHADD has over 16,000 members in 200 local chapters throughout the U.S. CHADD approached Engage with a question about our DNN training programs, but after a long and thoughtful conversation wound up with a long-term development partner. CHADD needed to relaunch their aging website, which had become too cumbersome and dated for its members to use effectively.

After reviewing CHADD's current site and reviewing the organizations goals, Engage went to work laying down a process for approaching the project and attacking the outdated sites problems. Engage determined that we would need to take on a more extensive discovery process with CHADD, especially since we were dealing with a nine person committee with very strong and good vision for their organization. The main goal remained the same though, focus on giving CHADD readership improved navigation, well organized content, while maintaining CHADD's status as the number 1 leader in ADHD advocacy and education.

Discovery

The discovery process with CHADD was a crucial step in identifying the best strategy for reworking their site. Through working with CHADD on their site and organization goals, we were able to start to break down all the information that CHADD provided to their users, and identify areas of the site where users were potentially lost or confused. There was also a very strong marketing need for CHADD, to promote not just their status as advocates, but promote and encourage membership, which truly opened up resources to their users nationwide.

Advise and Prioritize

Led by Engage Creative Director, Anthony Overkamp, the CHADD sprint team undertook a content strategy effort and together identified a POV approach that organized key articles under two audience-centric silos: Adults with ADHD and Parents & Caregivers of Children with ADHD. We created two information funnels directing these audiences to the content most likely to suit their needs. This gave the site more focus, and helped to facilitate navigation patterns that we would reproduce throughout the site for a clean and intuitive user experience.

Membership features and benefits were also brought front and center throughout the site, complete with promotional roadblocks to member-only articles. The user is exposed to membership promos until he or she logs in as a member, leveraging DNN permissions. Engage worked to give users access to see all the content that is available not only free, but as a benefit as becoming a member of CHADD.

User Focused Design

With an entirely new navigation in place, users were given greater opportunity to find the information they needs following the path that was closest related to their need. Enhancing these point of views, we used color and design patterns to give the user visual cues onto what kind of content they are exploring. This allowed users to either dig deeper into the area of focus they are on, or alert them that they maybe crossing over into another area of interest.

The designs color choices, typography, and layout was also overhauled, with a keen attention to keeping the overall feel of the site calm and accessible. We wanted to keep the users focus in mind, and eliminate as many distractions as possible in order to really enhance and support the content that is provided. Any related content that appears on the page was treated as relevant only, removing distracting, unrelated content when necessary.

AMS Integration

Engage took advantage of CHADD's chosen AMS, Protech, and took every oppurtunity to extend it building many custom uses for the sites needs. One of the most exciting features was a resource directoy to bring users information from three sources; Local CHADD chapters, Teachers (Parents to Parents), and ADHD professionals. Under the guidance of Engage Lead Software Architect, Brian Dukes, Engage developed a custom solution that brought together these three disparate components into one resource search tool (which in turn is powered on the back-end by CHADD's CRM tool). Here are just a few of the other feature Engage built using and extending the Protech AMS:

  • Custom Search Tool
  • Online Store and Catalog
  • Shopping Cart
  • Numerous Registration Controls
  • Events

Engage also developed an online reporting solution to assist in keeping the site's content fresh. Article authors set a date for each article to expire, a report then notifies the site's editors which articles are set to expire in the near term, and the editors the opportunity to refresh or remove out-dated content. This was a big win for CHADD content editors, giving them an easier way to make sure their content is always relevant and current.
